We Recommend: Popson's

We love the cozy Marina restaurant Causwells, and while their menu is varied and full of delicious items, their Americana Burger has always been a standout - we are thrilled that the owners finally have a separate restaurant dedicated to it.  Popson's recently opened in SOMA, and one of the big perks of heading down there is that you can now order a side of fries alongside your burger, as Causwells only serves theirs with crispy onions.  The menu is simple and straightforward:  Burgers, chili, salad, and fries.  You can never go wrong with the classic cheeseburger.

What We're Talking About This Week

Tomorrow is a very special day in Los Angeles: It's the LA Weekly's Burgers & Beer event at the centrally located Memorial Coliseum.  Be sure to get tickets in advance.  We can't wait to try all off the offerings, especially those from our favorite spots, such as Little Dom's and Plan Check.  

 We have spoken about our love of the annual Peaches Christ Showgirls extravaganza at San Francisco's Castro Theatre before, and now is your chance to see the action for yourself at tomorrow's show!

The other big event going on in San Francisco this weekend is obviously Outside Lands, which starts today and runs through Sunday.  The city's biggest musical festival, this year's line up includes Elton John, Kendrick Lamar, The Black Keys, St. Vincent, D'Angelo, and Chet Faker.  As excited as we are for the music, the food and drink tents are always stiff competition for our attention.

Like any city, LA is constantly changing, and sadly, bringing in the new means saying good bye to some favorite old haunts. This list remembers some of the best places of the past decades that are closing or moving.  We still can't believe that House of Blues won't be in its legendary Sunset Boulevard location anymore.

We are currently loving Keith Richards' memoir Life, especially his reflections on his career and musical influences.  We already knew some of the work of Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson, but it's been especially enjoyable to revisit their music knowing the massive influence they had not only on Richards, but the Rolling Stones as a whole, as well as the Beatles, and other contemporary bands.

What We're Talking About This Week

Science is pretty fascinating sometimes, like in this BBC story explaining what would happen were you to fall into a black hole.

San Francisco's South of Market, or SoMa, area has been in a dramatic transformation recently, but the changes started nearly four decades ago.  We love these photos, by Janet Delaney, now on display at the city's de Young Museum, documenting SoMa's shift in the 1970s.

We talk about our favorite foods a lot, but yesterday was National Burger Day, and instead of indulging, we just spent way too long reading this list of Bay Area burgers we need to try.

The country's largest design fair, Dwell on Design, starts today at the LA Convention Center (plus in various homes, etc.) and runs through the weekend - see all the details here.

 These museums opening around the world are giving us a serious urge to travel - the Fondazione Prada Milano and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris are both unbelievably amazing looking - but we are happy that one of the top 5 new museums is right here in Downtown LA!  We will definitely be heading to The Broad as soon as it opens in September to see their contemporary collection.

Foodie Favorite: The Lamb Burger at Cafe Chez Marie

We love this French Moroccan bistro, its back patio is so quaint, you feel like you're in some tiny European village. As you are aware, we LOVE burgers. Love. So of course when we saw a lamb burger on the menu were were intrigued. Seasoned with Ras El Hanout and topped with aioli, harissa and lettuce on a brioche bun, we were not disappointed. Served with a side salad, we felt less guilty than if it were accompanied with pommes frites.

Foodie Favorite: PCB at Plan Check

Our love for burgers is no secret, and the PCB at Plan Check did not leave us disappointed. With three locations in L.A., we picked the Sawtelle one. Even though it was the weekend, we didn't have to wait long because we were able to snag a seat at the bar. The PCB comes with americanized dashi cheese, ketchup leather, schmaltz onions and mixed pickles. We loved the baby kale caesar salad as well. The fries were not as good as we might have hoped, next time we might try the waffle fries.

Foodie Favorite: The Veggie Tejano at Roam

As you may have gathered by now, we are HUGE burger & fries fans. When we want a healthier option, one of our favorites is the veggie Tejano at Roam in Cow Hollow. The patty is made from quinoa and beets, so it's still a good source of protein. The Tejano-style burger comes with pepper jack cheese, avocado, jalapeño relish, tomato, corn chips and a herb ranch dressing. The fry-fecta is a great accompaniment, with french fries, sweet potato fries and zucchini onion haystacks.
