Fashionable Film: Brooklyn

Our final Oscar nominee fashionable film for this year is the stunning Brooklyn, starring the luminous Saoirse Ronan.  Just 21, Ronan does a beautiful job portraying Eilis, a young Irish immigrant navigating 19050s New York City on her own, in a film that is sweet without ever feeling sappy.  Costume designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux put together a series of looks that mirror the film's sentiment.  Dressed in colors that are soft and give a sense of optimism, Eilis navigates her new environment, and revisits the island home she left behind, looking every bit a new American girl.

Fashionable Film: Cinderella

Cinderella is an incredibly lovely film, with its cinematography, set design, and costumes each giving the right blend of romance and fantasy that are appropriate for a live action movie that was adapted from a Disney animation.  Kenneth Branaugh directed Lily James as the title character and Cate Blanchett as her evil stepmother, and he did a wonderful job of bringing the original cartoon from our childhoods to life.  Cinderella herself doesn't have many costume changes, but the dress she wears to the ball is every bit the fairy tale gown you'd imagine, and the costume designer did a wonderful job creating a color palette and giving each look beautiful details that transcend a specific era.

Fashionable Films: The Hateful Eight and The Revenant

Once a major genre, we haven't seen many great Westerns in the last forty years, so it was a welcome change that this year's Oscar contender movies brought us not one, but two films that celebrate the Old West.  Life for the characters of The Hateful Eight and The Revenant is gritty, dark, and full of hardship, but they also have some really amazing coats.  These are some of our favorite style moments from both films, which are in the running for Best Picture - only The Revenant is in the running for Best Costume Design, though.
