After reading The Price of Salt, the Patricia Highsmith novel on which Carol was based, the film wasn't all that we expected, but it's incredibly beautiful visually. Rooney Mara's pearly complexion and innocent gaze are a great fit for her character, Therese Belivet. Cate Blanchett is like a modern day Joan Crawford with her mid-Atlantic accent and sophisticated airs. Their costumes are all fabulous, especially Blanchett's, as her Carol has money to burn on fur coats, luxurious silks, and lots of brooches. The sets and cinematography also both helped to create a 1950s world as envisioned by director Todd Haynes.
