By The Sea, Angelina Jolie's third directorial effort and the first she has starred in - alongside her husband, Brad Pitt, no less - has received mixed reviews. Upon viewing, we understood why critics might not be completely positive about certain aspects of the film, but there was no denying that it is visually stunning. Set in a hotel overlooking the rocky cliffs and ocean in Malta (standing in for the South of France), By the Sea is an homage to the moody and melancholic European films of the late 1960s and early 1970s. From the gorgeous leads Jolie and Pitt, to supporting actress Mélanie Laurent, to the interior design, the location and the characters' vintage silver convertible, to lots of fabulous, neutral colored clothing... We were smitten with everything we saw.
