The 1953 romantic comedy, How to Marry a Millionaire, was one of two films in Marilyn Monroe's breakout year in which she portrayed a gold digger - the other being Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She co-starred as one of three motivated young women in this film, the other two played by the ridiculously chic Lauren Bacall and fun-loving Betty Grable, who were on the hunt for a wealthy man. The ladies rent a fabulous Manhattan apartment for appearances, and as models have access to all the best clothes, but it's merely a facade while they look for partners to bankroll their lives. True love wins out, but with costumes by Travilla, it's a stylish road to discovering what really matters.
