Scent of the Month

This month's scent is Penhaligon's Douro Eau de Portugal. It was first created in 1911 for Sir Percy Croft and "named after the port producing region in Portugal; the Douro Valley. This stylish and mellow delight begins with sharp green limes and soapy bergamot, blending with garden fresh geranium and lily at the heart. Then the base notes of musk, oakmoss and sandalwood start to assert themselves, imparting a leathery quality. Underpinned with labdanum, a bitter resin that imparts a unique leathery note, Douro Eau de Portugal is a deep and intensely aromatic cologne."

Lazy Pool Day Playlist

As the summer winds down, we are trying to squeeze in as many lazy pool days as possible.
Here's what we are playing while floating on our pool floats, reading our September issues,
planning our fall wardrobes...

Have a great holiday weekend!
You can listen to this playlist on spotify.

We Recommend: Where'd You Go Bernadette

Where'd You Go Bernadette is by far our favorite book of the summer.  Compulsively readable, and enjoyable from start to finish, this book details the life of Bernadette Fox, an eccentric and reclusive architect who's unhappily found herself living in Seattle due to her husband's career.  Told through emails, letters, articles, and her precocious (but definitely not cloying) young teen daughter Bee's voice, this book is so original, darkly funny, and touching in its way.  We can't recommend it enough - it will keep you engrossed all through the long weekend!

Fashion Inspiration: Balboa Boating Weekend

Inspiration: Our Style Icon Diane Kruger always looks fresh in stripes. Her
cute take on them in blues, for a trip with her boyfriend, Joshua Jackson, inspired us to play
with the look, while remembering the preppy feel of Orange County's Balboa Island.

Fashion Inspiration: Carmel Wine Weekend

Inspiration: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley always looks incredibly pulled together, with neutral accessories, and sexy but simply cut separates or dresses.  This is what we imagine the English beauty packing for the similarly cool Carmel wine country.

Showgirls!

We've been fans of the Castro Theatre's Sing-A-Longs for some time now, so when we were invited to drag queen extraordinaire Peaches Christ's presentation of Showgirls, we didn't hesitate. Celebrating its 16th anniversary, Peaches, the Nomis and Rena Riffel (who played Penny in the movie) acted out a mini version of the film, followed by a Nomi look-alike contest judged by Dewey Weber (who played Jeff) and lap-dances for everyone who had purchased a large popcorn.

Waiting for the show to begin

All of the performers take a bow

Introducing the people giving lap-dances to large-popcorn-purchasers.
Our favorites were A-man-duh Bynes and Condo-sleeza Rice.

Some of the lap-dancers, as well as an amazing performance in the audience below us,
involving a bra with built-in Easy Cheese dispensers.

A very fun night, we recommend checking out next year's performance!

Foodie Favorite: The Sausages at Wurstküche

Wurstküche is a great concept restaurant.  They're casual, fun, and hipster-y without trying too hard.  With locations in Downtown LA and Venice Beach, they have a menu that features sausages made from exotic meats, French fries with a variety of dipping sauces, and a multitude of beers to choose from.  We loved the smoked turkey sausage with Santa Fe jack cheese and jalapeno peppers, covered in plenty of sauerkraut and mustard.

Fashion Inspiration: Cote d'Azur Holiday

Inspiration: Nicole Richie looked effortlessly chic in coral on a recent family trip to St. Tropez.  We want to recreate her easy glamour with simple pieces in bold colors and whites for our fantasy Riviera holiday.

Style Icon: Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett's otherworldly beauty is a perfect foil for avant-garde fashion, and she wears it well.  She is always on the cutting edge, but never looks like a fashion victim, only herself.  She is always strikingly different on the red carpet, though she favors classic lines that reference eras past.  Clearly, she knows what she's doing and what she likes, and we love the confidence she wears with every look.

Out of Africa Inspired

One of our favorite Out of Africa inspired photo shoots is this one Keira Knightly starred in for the June 2007 issue of Vogue. All of the outfits are perfectly styled to capture the romance of the film. Keira's hair is gorgeous as well, styled in a messy low updo.

Feature styled by the fantastic Grace Coddington.
